What is Yoga?

Lots of people have their opinion as to what it is and what it isn’t.

Let’s take a look what one Yoga Master says yoga is.

A quote from Swami Satchidananda. He wrote the Preface for The Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali.

“Let us know that all these ideas and practices are there to help us forget our personal selfishness and broaden our minds more and more. As my Master Swami Sivanandaji used to say, ‘Just be good and do good.’ It’s very simple. Be good and do good and the entire wisdom will be yours.

Every day let us check our progress and see that we grow a little better. Every day should elevate us a little, broaden our attitudes, reduce our selfishness and make us better masters over our own body, senses and mind. This kind of Yoga that will really help us.”

I have read many Yoga books by the great masters and I never once read that Yoga HAD to look a certain way.

Let's go back to the quote:

  • Be good good and do good

  • Check progress

  • Did We grow

  • Broaden our attitude

  • Reduce selfishness

  • Masters over our own bodies, senses and mind.

Where does it say that:

  • There has to be no music. Maybe that’s the very thing that gets you to connect to your body.

  • It can be any other activity other than the yoga sequence (that someone made up). A physical practice of some sort is only part of Your spiritual journey.

  • A physical practice is just a Spiritual Practice in disguise.

I have more but it will make this too long.

But when someone says “you’re doing yoga wrong” or 'that's not yoga', Ignore them. They do not know your heart. Yoga can look like anything if you are ..

  • You know this is how you connect with God or the God of your understanding

  • Being good and doing good

  • Checking your progress

  • Growing

  • Broadening attitudes

  • Reducing selfishness

  • Mastering your own bodies, senses and mind.

Your Physical/Spiritual Practice will look different because it should. When you are living your authentic life and not worrying about outside validation from someone that doesn’t know you. You will be living your Yoga.
